Inside/home—the most fundamental space of practice in the structure of human groups; Outside/neighbors—people “coexisting” nearby with us; Re-presented Stories/narrative—the collective construction of daily life.
Will “home” and “house” change in meaning? Is one’s identity fixed or fluid? How do we reinterpret the narrative of everyday life?
The exhibition Between Inside and Outside, The Flow of Represented Stories took place at a row of Hakka houses of the old village Fang’er, Aohu, Shenzhen, which had lost their housing function and been transformed into exhibition space as they were emptied by the moving of residents. The village is situated on the changing fringe of the city.
The exhibition, taking an “open” approach by adopting a “relay invitation” mechanism, launched a total of six groups of works. Those invited can liberate themselves from their everyday roles or play the double role of “creator” and “curator” when “collaborating” on their works.
In accord with the feature of the venue, the participants played the role of “neighbor” in every “home” of theirs, connected the stories between the homes and neighbors through their pieces of art, tried to give answers to the two themes of “Inside and Outside” and “Expressing and Responding” in the process of interaction, and probed into the meanings of memory, community, identity and everyday life.

Collaborated with Arbre (一树), a local independent art space from Shenzhen, a catalogue set of the exhibition has been produced. Continuing the initial pursuit of “collective opinions”, the catalogue set is divided into one main book and two supplements, independent of each other in narrative logic.
